A tri-color cat with one paw, sitting calmly in a bathtub with a rubber duck.

On the surface, it’s a whimsical, charming image. But the story behind this particular portrait is one of incredible resilience and deep, thoughtful love. It’s the story of Popcorn.

The Vision: A Birthday Wish Reimagined

The commission began with a wonderfully creative idea from Popcorn's owner, Jason. He wanted to recreate a print his girlfriend had once fallen in love with, but with their own special cat as the star of the scene. This was destined to be a secret birthday gift. Years ago, his girlfriend had seen the original print and deeply regretted not getting it. Jason remembered this, and planned to surprise her with a version that was infinitely more personal—fulfilling a forgotten wish and celebrating the brave little cat who had captured their hearts.

The Star of the Show: Popcorn The One-Legged Cat

As I learned the story behind Popcorn—or Poppy, as she’s affectionately called—the painting took on an even deeper meaning. Her life began with a fight for survival. She was brought into the RSPCA as a tiny kitten, suffering from a broken leg and severe bruising after a dog attack. Jason’s girlfriend, who worked at the centre, knew the tiny animal needed intensive care and personally brought her home.

Despite their best efforts, the damage was too severe, eventually requiring a full amputation of the leg right from her shoulder. But from that hardship, her true spirit blossomed. Jason described her as becoming "the happiest, sweetest, most loving cat ever!"—a joyful soul who greets every day with affection.

The Creative Process: Bringing Whimsy to Life

This commission was a little different from the realistic pet portraits I normally create. The challenge here wasn't just to paint Popcorn from a photo, but to replicate the whimsical style of a print from a shop, placing her right into that charming scene.

While it was a departure from my usual work, the story behind the request was so inspiring and thoughtful that I fell in love with the idea immediately. It was a true pleasure to bring this vision to life. The process became a close collaboration to ensure every detail was perfect—from the playful rubber duck and sweet bow to what Jason called her "signature grubby little nose," which he sent extra photos of to make sure I painted it perfectly pink. Each brushstroke felt like it was adding to their beautiful story.

The Final Portrait: A Symbol of Joy

The finished piece is more than just a fun image; it's a celebration of a beautiful spirit. It’s a testament to the idea that our past doesn't define us and a tribute to the boundless joy a small, resilient cat brings to her family. It stands as a timeless reminder of love, resilience, and a wonderfully thoughtful gift.
