When Christine—a returning client who previously commissioned a heartfelt memorial of her own beloved Yorkie, Monty—reached out again, it was for a beautifully selfless purpose. She wanted to surprise a dear friend with a portrait of Penny, a sweet 18-year-old kitty, to honour a lifetime of companionship. Knowing firsthand the healing power a painting can bring, Christine entrusted me once more to capture Penny's gentle spirit.
The Traditional Essence
For this intimate tribute, we selected the Traditional Package (30x30cm). This jewel-like scale is absolutely perfect for capturing the heartfelt essence and delicate features of a feline's expressive face. Looking through the reference photos, I was immediately drawn to an image of Penny nestled beautifully amongst the flowers in a garden. To truly celebrate her delicate features and elevate the composition, I curated a soft blue background. This careful artistic choice provided a serene contrast, perfectly complementing and drawing out the stunning depth of Penny’s beautiful blue eyes so that she truly blossomed on the canvas.
A Collaborative Touch
Creating a true, authentic likeness is a journey of mutual trust, and I deeply value the collaborative process. When reviewing the initial progress, Christine's careful eye provided invaluable feedback. We realized together that Penny was actually standing—not sitting—in our chosen reference photo.By gently reworking her posture to reflect her true stance and adding a touch more definition to her delicate chin, we ensured her lovely face became wonderfully prominent. The result was a deeply accurate, soulful representation of Penny that would serve as a perfect tribute. The finished heirloom was then carefully packaged and shipped securely to Capalaba, Queensland, ready to bring comfort and beautiful memories to her friend.
