There are weddings, and then there are weddings that stay with you, not just as a memory, but as a vivid tapestry of emotion, beauty, and unique stories. Cody and Matt's celebration at the iconic Mona Farm, just outside Canberra, was one such occasion. As a live wedding painter, I've had the privilege of travelling from my Gold Coast studio to many breathtaking locations, but Mona Farm in autumn held a special kind of magic.
The Consultation & Vision
What set this wedding apart from the outset was the couple's vision. During our consultation, Cody and Matt expressed a deep desire for their wedding portrait to feature not just themselves, but also the stunning, iconic landscape of Mona Farm. They envisioned a piece that would truly transport them back to that specific place and time. We discussed capturing a view of the river with its charming bridge, a scene that resonated deeply with them. The chosen season, April, promised a spectacular display of Canberran autumn, with its signature red and golden trees – a detail we were all excited to weave into the artwork.
Choosing the Right Canvas for an Epic Scene
To truly do justice to both the breathtaking landscape and the elegant couple, Cody and Matt opted for the Luxury Package. This package features a generous 90x75cm canvas, providing ample space to capture the grandeur of Mona Farm alongside the intricate details of their wedding attire and the emotion of the moment. It was the perfect choice for an artwork intended to be a significant family heirloom.
The Wedding Day - Capturing Magic Live
The wedding day itself was extraordinary. The bride's dress was a masterpiece of design, featuring delicate guipure lace elements that hinted at the skin beneath, topped with exquisite embroidery. For seven hours, I painted live at Mona Farm, laying down the first foundational layer of oil paint as guests looked on. There's a unique energy to live painting; guests witness the transformation of a blank canvas, and the artwork becomes a shared experience, a talking point, and a part of the day's entertainment. Cody and Matt, set against the backdrop of that iconic Mona Farm view with the river and bridge, began to emerge on the canvas, and the vibrant autumn colours of the distant trees started to tell their seasonal story. Everyone was thrilled with this first stage.
Studio Refinement - The Details That Make the Difference
But the journey of a live wedding painting doesn't end when the music stops. I carefully transported the painting back to my Gold Coast studio. Here, the real detailed work began. This is where the "live" sketch transforms into a deeply refined, heirloom-quality piece.
A significant portion of this studio time was dedicated to the bride's stunning dress. Capturing the sheer guipure lace, the delicate embroidery, and the way the fabric flowed – it was a meticulous, painstaking process. I didn't just work from photos; I recalled the feeling of seeing that dress in person, the way it moved, the way the light caught it. It’s this blend of observation and remembered emotion that allows an artist to bring such elements to life. The aim was to convey the sensation of the dress, its almost cloud-like pomp and elegance. I'm thrilled with how it turned out, and you can even see snippets of this process in a video I created.
Completion and Delivery - A Timeless Keepsake
In total, the studio refinement took about two weeks. Once every detail was perfected and the oil paints had thoroughly dried, I applied a protective varnish to ensure the painting’s longevity. Then, it was carefully packaged and sent on its way to Cody and Matt.
The true magic happens when a couple receives their finished painting. It’s more than just art; it's a portal back to their wedding day. Looking at the scene, the colours, the details, they can relive those precious emotions, the joy, the love, and the unique atmosphere of their celebration at Mona Farm.
This painting is now a part of their story, a timeless keepsake to be cherished for generations.
