A Distinguished Gentleman: Monty's Memorial Portrait
This oil portrait honours Monty, a Yorkshire Terrier who was tiny in stature but possessed a massive, hilarious personality. For 16 and a half years, he was the loving "mummy's boy" to his human, Christine. Described as a "distinguished gentleman" who would comically give off a snobby vibe, his passing left a profound silence in the home he once filled with his larger-than-life character. This piece was commissioned by Christine as a deeply personal tribute to keep the memory of her special boy close.
The Challenge: Guiding a Vision Through Grief
The most delicate challenge for a memorial portrait is navigating a lifetime of cherished memories to find the single, perfect moment to capture on canvas. Christine found herself torn—loving the "full beard" and direct gaze in some photos, but drawn to the "cheekiness" and warm light of another. My role became more than just an artist; it was to be a gentle guide. Through a collaborative and trusting conversation, we chose a single photograph as our foundation—one of him on a red rug, looking happy and full of character—assuring her that his key features, like his signature beard, could be artfully enhanced.
Bringing a Soulful Spirit to Life on CanvasWorking from our chosen reference, the goal was to create a "True Likeness" portrait on a 40x30cm canvas that felt both authentic and comforting. The warm light of the primary photo provided the perfect atmosphere. The crucial step was to honour Christine's wish for his fuller, more characteristic beard. Using her other photos for inspiration, I carefully painted this feature while staying true to the lighting and soul of the main image, paying special attention to his expressive eyebrows and the woody-brown tones in his eyes. Every brushstroke was dedicated to capturing the distinguished, yet endlessly loving, spirit she missed so dearly.
The Reaction: "The Way I Just Sobbed! It's Perfect."
The moment Christine saw the finished portrait, her emotional response was the greatest reward an artist could hope for: "... Oh Elena! The way I just sobbed! It’s perfect. He looks perfect. I gasped and put my hand over my mouth. Your skill is amazing, you have captured my little guy so perfectly. I am beyond grateful."
This portrait, now framed in a beautiful natural wood finish, hangs on Christine's wall. It serves not just as a piece of art, but as a comforting presence—a tangible connection to the distinguished gentleman whose spirit now fills the quiet house once more.
