A portrait is more than just a likeness; it is a vessel for memory. When Hylton reached out to the studio, he wanted to honour a very special soul: Barney, a dog who was a true explorer at heart. Barney was well-travelled and inquisitive, a companion whose nose frequently led him into grand adventures (and the occasional bit of trouble).

The heart of this commission was clear from the start: Hylton and Julie wanted to capture the
profound depth of Barney’s beautiful brown eyes. There is a specific kind of wisdom and curiosity found in the gaze of an adventurous dog, and bringing that "he’s right here with me" feeling to life on canvas became my primary mission in the studio.

Windows to an Adventurous Soul

For Barney’s tribute, we chose the Classic Package (40x30cm). This size allowed me to compose his portrait at a near 1:1 ratio, ensuring his features felt life-sized and intimate. By scaling the composition to focus on his head and gaze, the viewer is drawn immediately into those warm, liquid-brown eyes that Hylton loved so much.
Working in archival oils, I spent a significant amount of time layering the pigments to build the glassy transparency of his eyes and the soft, varied textures of his coat. I wanted the painting to feel as though he had just stepped back inside from a long walk, his spirit still vibrant and ready for the next horizon.

A Natural Finish

To complement Barney’s earthy tones and his life as an outdoor explorer, Hylton and Julie selected a custom wood floating frame. The natural grain of the timber provided the perfect organic border, grounding the artwork and making it a timeless addition to their home in Googong, NSW.
Knowing that both Hylton and Julie felt his essence had been truly captured was the most fulfilling moment of the process. It is my hope that this portrait serves as a lasting window into the many journeys they shared together.
