A milestone birthday calls for an unforgettable, heirloom gift. When Ioana reached out to me with the hopes of surprising her husband, Jonny, for his 40th birthday, she wanted to capture the very heart of his world: his bond with their beloved dog, Cricket. They share a love for long, meandering weekend walks, and Ioana wanted a portrait that immortalized that exact feeling—the absolute adoration and excitement in Cricket’s eyes as she looks up at him.
The Legacy Essence
For this deeply personal storytelling piece, we selected the Legacy Package (50x40cm). While portraits are traditionally vertical, we chose a gentle landscape orientation for Cricket. This allowed the composition to breathe organically and perfectly framed the narrative of their walks. I anchored her stance with a realistic, vibrant green grass edge and a clean pavement, allowing her bright red lead to trail off the canvas—a subtle nod to their weekend adventures. I was also careful to weave in the tiny, precious details that make Cricket who she is, from the unique thumbprint mark on the top of her head to the cute speckle of freckles across her nose. Beautifully, the soft grey tones I curated for the background turned out to be Jonny’s favourite colour—a serendipitous touch to a heartfelt gift.
A Collaborative Touch
Creating a true, authentic likeness is a journey of mutual trust, and I deeply value the collaborative process. Ioana and I worked closely to ensure Cricket was captured exactly as Jonny remembers her best. This meant gently stepping back in time to 2019 to paint her without a spot that had recently grown under her eye. Later in the process, Ioana noted that Cricket had just had her teeth professionally cleaned at the vet! With a quick trip to my studio's "in-house dental clinic," I happily whitened a small back tooth to perfectly match her fresh, polished smile. The finished heirloom, set in a gorgeous natural wood frame, was carefully packaged and shipped securely to Dural, New South Wales, ready for Jonny's big celebration.
