The deepest bonds we share with our pets are often the ones that are hardest to put into words, but are so clearly visible in their eyes. When Benjamin reached out to commission a portrait of his best friend, Phoebe, his affection for her was unmistakable. A striking French Mastiff cross American Bull Terrier, Phoebe has the beautiful presence of a friendly giant, but it is her gentle, loving spirit that truly defines her. Benjamin wanted a piece that focused closely on her expressive face and a touch of her upper body, capturing the warm soul he knows so well.

The Traditional Essence

For this intimate tribute, Benjamin selected the Traditional Package (30x30cm). This jewel-like, square format is absolutely perfect for drawing the viewer directly into Phoebe’s gaze. By keeping the composition focused on her face and neckline, we were able to highlight the rich, powerful structure of her breed while maintaining a profound sense of closeness. Every brushstroke in archival oil was dedicated to bringing out the soft textures of her coat and the undeniable kindness in her expression. To complement the natural warmth of the painting, the canvas was finished in a beautiful custom timber floating frame.

A Collaborative Touch

Creating a portrait that truly resonates requires open communication and mutual trust, and I was so grateful for Benjamin's dedication to the process. To ensure Phoebe’s eyes were painted with perfect clarity and depth, we worked together to find the ideal reference photos, allowing me to study the exact colour and light in her gaze. Benjamin also requested a small, thoughtful adjustment—painting her without a tear mark beneath her eye, ensuring the final piece reflected the absolute best version of his beautiful girl. After applying a museum-grade protective varnish to ensure her longevity for centuries to come, Phoebe was securely packaged and shipped to her new home in Mackay, Queensland.
