A portrait is often a reflection of a name’s legacy. When Stirling reached out to Elena Valerie Art to commission a piece for his wife’s anniversary, he introduced me to Freya—a three-year-old German Shepherd whose name echoes the Norse goddess of love and beauty.
Stirling’s vision was clear: he wanted to bypass the "goofy" side of puppyhood and instead immortalize Freya’s noble, intelligent, and strong-willed nature. With Stirling’s own Norwegian ancestry providing a deep personal connection to her name, we set out to create a piece that felt truly "goddess-like."

The Signature Presence

To do justice to a breed as commanding as the German Shepherd, we chose the Signature Package (75x60cm). This grand scale allows for incredible detail in the fur and expression, ensuring Freya doesn't just sit on the wall—she anchors the room.
During the painting process, I found myself deeply inspired by her namesake. Rather than a traditional garden or home setting, I curated a non-specific, ethereal background. Using shimmering, Nordic-inspired blues and soft, luminous light, I created a cool atmosphere that provides a striking contrast to the warm, regal golds of Freya's coat.

The Personal Heartbeat

One of the most delicate touches in this portrait was the inclusion of her name tag. While hidden in the original reference, we decided to "turn" it toward the viewer, hand-painting her name in fine detail. It adds a sweet, personal heartbeat to an otherwise monumental piece of fine art.
Because this was a surprise anniversary gift, the final handover was a covert operation! We coordinated a personal pickup on the Gold Coast, ensuring the painting—nestled in a sleek matte black floating frame—made it home safely for the big reveal on January 27th.
