Maverick | A Father’s Day Tribute & A Companion for Zeus
 
The greatest compliment an artist can receive is when a client returns to the studio to entrust you with another chapter of their story.
I was absolutely delighted to welcome Elisabeth back so soon. Earlier this year, in April, I had the privilege of painting Zeus, a magnificent Saint Bernard, as a surprise birthday gift for her father. That huge 120cm statement piece became an instant favourite in their home in NSW. So, when Elisabeth reached out just a few months later with a secret mission for Father’s Day—a portrait of their newest family member, Maverick—I knew we had to create something just as special to complete the set.
 
A Tale of Two Portraits
 
While Zeus’s portrait was all about grand scale for a milestone birthday, Maverick’s commission was about perfect harmony. Elisabeth chose the Heirloom Package (90cm x 75cm), a substantial canvas that commands attention while sitting beautifully alongside the larger piece.
For Maverick, a handsome and soulful Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, we wanted to capture a sense of home. While Zeus was depicted on the golf course, for Maverick we selected a background featuring a beloved coastal view from the family's property. It was vital that the two paintings "spoke" to each other. I carefully curated a colour palette that was warm, uplifting, and complementary to Zeus’s portrait, ensuring that when they hang in the same home, they feel like a true collection—distinct in personality, but united in style.
 
The Process
 
Working with Elisabeth again was a joy because we had already established such a great rhythm. We decided on a crisp white floating frame to match the original framing on Zeus, keeping the aesthetic modern and fresh.
Despite the distance between my Gold Coast studio and her family in NSW, the collaboration was seamless. We moved from securing the custom canvas to the final varnishing with ease, ensuring Maverick was ready to meet his buddy Zeus.
 
The Unveiling
 
There is always a holding of breath before the client sees the final reveal. When I sent Elisabeth the photo of the finished piece, her response confirmed we had hit the mark again: "...Wow, looks amazing. So excited for my dad to see it!"
Maverick has now travelled safely down the coast to join Zeus in their private collection. It warms my heart to know that in the span of just one year, this father has had both of his best friends immortalised in oil paint—a timeless reminder of his daughter’s love and the bond he shares with his dogs.
