Art has a unique ability to heal and to hold onto the ones we love. When Cate reached out to my studio in October, she shared a story that resonated deeply with me. Her family had recently said goodbye to "Mumma," a cherished cat who was much more than a pet—she was the "head of the family."
Cate’s vision was to create a timeless memorial portrait as a Christmas gift for her mother, who was feeling the loss profoundly. It was an honour to be entrusted with such a sensitive and loving gesture.
Capturing the "Motion Detector"During our consultation, Cate described Mumma’s personality so vividly that I felt I knew her. She wasn't a quiet companion; she was lively, opinionated, and affectionately known as the household "motion detector"—if you moved an inch, she would meow to let you know she saw you!
For this piece, we selected the Traditional Package (30x30cm). This intimate, jewel-like canvas size is perfect for a memorial piece, inviting the viewer to lean in close. My goal was to look past the reference photos and capture that specific spark of intelligence and alertness in her eyes—to ensure that when Cate’s mum unwrapped the painting on Christmas morning, she didn't just see a picture of a cat, but felt the presence of her chatty, lively girl.
A Journey Home for Christmas
The timeline for this commission was tight, with the added complexity that Cate was in the middle of moving house in New South Wales right before the holidays. We coordinated closely to ensure the painting was finished, varnished, and fitted into a custom white floating frame—chosen to keep the artwork feeling fresh and bright—just in time for the festive season.
When the final reveal was sent, Cate’s reaction confirmed we had captured her spirit: "...Absolutely ecstatic."
Mumma was carefully packaged and shipped securely to a parcel locker in NSW, arriving safely to be placed back where she belongs: with the family who adored her.
