A portrait serves as a bridge between the physical world and the cherished memories we hold in our hearts. When Lucy reached out to me, she wanted to honour a very special soul: Rosemary, a beloved British Shorthair who had recently passed away.

Rosemary was a cat of quiet rituals. Whether she was laying out on the deck watching for lizards or relaxing in her favourite spot on the couch, she was the heartbeat of her home. Lucy commissioned this piece as a surprise gift for her parents in Berry, NSW, seeking to capture that gentle, grounded energy Rosemary brought to their lives.

Capturing the "Loaf"

Every pet has a signature silhouette that their family would recognize anywhere. For Rosemary, it was her classic "loaf" pose on the top of the couch. In the studio, I focused on this peaceful composition to reflect her serene nature.

While a British Shorthair’s coat may appear as a single tone at a glance, the reality is a complex tapestry of colour. Translating her fur into oils was a technical journey; I spent hours layering intricate shadows and mid-tones to ensure her form felt three-dimensional and soft, while keeping the contrast balanced to honour her true-to-life appearance. I particularly enjoyed detailing her soulful, colourful eyes, which were the focal point of her expression.

A Surprise for Berry

Because this was a gift for her parents, the process required a delicate touch. We ensured the delivery to New South Wales was handled with no pricing or invoices were included, keeping the focus entirely on the art and the memory.

When I shared the final reveal with Lucy, her response was the greatest reward an artist can receive:

"... Oh my gosh!!! I love it soooo much! You are sooo talented! Thank you so much for the effort you have put in, it is absolutely gorgeous and it captured Rosemary sooo well. Mum and Dad will love it!"

Rosemary’s portrait was finished with a sleek black floating frame, providing a modern, sophisticated edge that made the silvery tones of her coat truly sing.
