A portrait is often more than just a likeness; it is a vessel for memory. When Rebecca approached me, she wasn't just looking for a painting of her parents' late dog, Tara—she was planning a deeply meaningful surprise.

This portrait was destined to be a combined wedding anniversary and Christmas gift, a tribute to a companion who was "very much loved" and deeply missed by the whole family.

Finding the "Smile"

Choosing the right reference photo is always a collaborative process. Rebecca had a photo she loved—Tara sitting beautifully on the grass, looking up at the camera. The lighting and composition were perfect, but there was one small detail Rebecca wanted to change. In the photo, Tara looked quite serious, but the family remembered her differently.

Rebecca’s brief was clear: she wanted to capture Tara with "more of a smiley face."

For this commission, we chose the Classic Package (40x30cm). In the studio, I worked to translate that serious reference photo into a joyful memory. I focused on softening her expression and highlighting the warmth in her eyes, ensuring she looked as happy on canvas as she made her family feel in real life.

"My Parents Are Going to Cry"

There is a special kind of pressure when painting a memorial piece that is also a surprise gift. When I sent the final reveal to Rebecca, her reaction confirmed we had succeeded in bringing that happy spirit back to life:

"I am in awe. Absolutely stunning work... Just beautiful, my parents are going to cry!"

Tara was fitted into a natural wood floating frame—specifically chosen to match the existing artwork in her parents' home—and shipped securely to Narangba, Queensland, ready for a very emotional unboxing.
